Double Bassist with the Arius Chamber Society/ Edina (Minneapolis), Minnesota
The Arius Chamber Ensemble, created and led by Robert (Bob) Fried, consisted of approximately 12 string players performing without conductor. Mr. Johnson was the single double bassist from 2004-7, as Arius played numerous concerts in the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

An incomplete list of works performed includes:
Albinoni (Giazotto): Adagio in G minor
Bach, J.S.: Cantata #21/ I Have Had Much Distress
Bach, J.S: Cantata #140/ Wake, Arise
Britten: Simple Symphony
Bruckner: Adagio, from the String Quintet/ arr. by Lucas Drew
Holst: Brook Green Suite
Kopelent, Marek: Das Schweißtuch der Veronika/ Veronika’s Veil
Mendelssohn: String Symphonies
Mozart: Divertimento K. 136
Mozart: Divertimento in B-flat K. 137
Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik K. 525
Mozart: Adagio and Fugue K. 546
Tschaikowsky: Serenade for Strings
Wolf, Hugo: Italian Serenade

Most unfortunately Bob Fried (violist) suffered a debilitating injury in 2007 which rendered continuance of Arius impossible. Arius with Bob Fried as a musical leader represented the very top level of music making I’ve experienced. The group had a unique deep sound and grounded concept of music making made possible by extensive rehearsal and interaction amongst the musicians, without regard to a conductor’s dictates.
